it seems to me, and maybe i will direct us to the navy, because the numbers matter in the navy. obviously it is a lot of great people. we have half as many chips as we had 30 years ago. some people say that that is okay because they are technologically advanced we don't need as many. which i am sure that that is true in part. but it does seem like numbers matter to a certain extent. that is the thrust of my question. we are asking you, the navy, to do a lot of things. to go and chase the pirates off the coast of samarra. we are asking you to send humanitarian aid from the caribbean and citizen destroyers and we will need to keep an eye on china as well. it seems like the world has not gotten safer. the question to the navy and the other services, three simple questions. how do you decide the priorities that you are asked by the combatant commanders. these different missions. how do you make that decision in terms i priority when you only have limited access? also, are there areas of the world where cousins will be decreased because of this? and also, most importantly, what impact does thi

of us will get 100% of what we want. democrats, they've got to, you know, make some tough choices too. democrats like me, we've said we're prepared to make some tough cuts and reforms, including the programs like medicare. but if we're willing to compromise, then republicans in the house have to compromise as well. that's what democracy's about. that's what this country needs right now. so -- [applause] let me just make one last point, by the way, for those who are following this. lately some people have been saying, well, maybe we'll just give the president some flexibility. he can make the cuts the way he wants them, and that way it won't be as damaging. you know, the problem is when you're cutting $85 billion in seven months, which represents over a 10% cut in the defense budget in seven months, there's no smart way to do that. there's no smart way to do that. you don't want to have to choose between -- let's see, do i close funding for the disabled kid or the poor kid? do i close this navy ship yard or some other one? when you're doing things in a way that's not smart, you can't g

in arizona, americans are looking to us for solutions and for action. this committee is a focal point for that process. i have introduced with having law enforcement agencies to enforce restricting gun trafficking. others want to ban ammunition clips and others have proposed modifications to the background check system to keep guns out of the wrong hands while not unnecessarily burdening law- abiding citizens. i am a lifelong vermonter. i know gun store owners in vermont. they follow the law. they conduct background checks to prevent getting guns to those who should not have them. they wonder why others who sell guns to not have to follow the same protective rules. i agree with these responsible business owners. if we could all agree that criminals and those adjudicated mentally ill should not buy firearms, why should we not try to plug the loopholes in the law that allows them to buy guns without background checks? it is a simple matter of common sense. if we agree the background check system is worth while, shouldn't we try to improve its content and use it so it can be more effecti

, missouri, with more for us now. claudia? >> reporter: well, jenna, the snowstorm has pretty much moved on but it is still a snow day for the kids and tough going out on the roads. not so much on the main highways or the city streets like this one here in downtown kansas city, but more in the residential neighborhoods and on the side streets where the plows really haven't had a chance to get in there and push all of the snow out of the way. as you mention the roads were an icy mess throughout the region yesterday. a lot of slipping and sliding. not a lot of serious crashes because people were out on the road and poor visibility made it hard for drivers to go very fast. those out and about today need to be careful especially if the streets are lined with the large snowdrifts. they might want to have a snow shovel with them. it was a very dynamic storm with snow, freezing rain. what the national weather service calls thunder sleet. lightning really lit up the skyline overnight and temperatures in the 20s over the next few days means all the heavy snow will stay put. farmers certainly hope

on immigration. some of the dos and don'ts are don't use phrases like illegals or aliens and never say anchor-baby. instead, why not use undocumented immigrant when referring to those who are here without, well, documentation. and when addressing border security, don't ever say "send them all back" or "electric fence." how about the enforcement of our borders. the hln is a group devoted the bringing more voters into the gop, is highlighting that the president broke his promise on the immigration reform in the first term, but they caution not to focus on amnesty, and to avoid at all costs president reagan's immigration reform as an example that applies today, so it got me wondering when i heard senator john mccain getting straight to the point this week. >> how do you convince the republicans about the path to citizenship? >> well, look, i will give you a little straight talk. look at the last election. look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote. >> so did senator mccain get the same memo? maybe he got the other memo, the one that sold all of the congressional memo

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us in the newsroom to explain. good morning. >> over the weekend lapd announcing a $1 million reward being offered for arrest and conviction of christopher dorner. now police chief charlie beck saying this is the largest local reward ever offered. several hours after making that statement sunday, tense moments at a lowe's store where two people thought they spotted dorner. the store was evacuated but police say it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. the search for dorner continues to focus on the area around big bear where police found a cache of weapons and camping gear inside his burned out truck. that is new over the weekend. also in a new twist, los angeles police say they are going to reopen dorner's
